Augustus: A Natural and Elegant Sideboard

An Exquisite Blend of Wood and Metal

The Augustus sideboard, designed by Mehmet ilker Duruoglu, is a stunning piece that combines natural textures with strong and elegant design elements. With its chestnut wood covering and perforated metal doors, this sideboard exudes simplicity and beauty.

When designing the Augustus sideboard, Duruoglu drew inspiration from his own showroom. He envisioned an object that would have a natural, strong, and elegant look. After numerous sketches, he finally found the right dimensions and proportions for his design. As a designer who appreciates natural textures, Duruoglu chose chestnut wood covering for the body of the sideboard. The chestnut wood not only adds a touch of natural beauty but also provides a strong and durable structure.

One of the unique features of the Augustus sideboard is the use of brushing technique on the chestnut wood. This technique enhances the texture of the wood, allowing users to truly feel and appreciate its natural beauty. The doors of the sideboard are made of perforated metal, creating a harmonious blend of wood and metal. The perforated metal not only adds a strong and remarkable look to the design but also provides transparency, allowing glimpses of the items stored inside. The doors, measuring 60 cm x 60 cm, jut out by 6 cm, adding an impressive visual element to the overall design.

The Augustus sideboard is crafted using chestnut wood covering on an MDF body. The wood is treated with a brushing technique to enhance its texture and finished with a matte surface. The center-piece of the doors is made of perforated metal sheet, which is finished with a matte black color. This combination of materials and finishes creates a visually striking and unique piece of furniture.

The Augustus sideboard measures W: 1800 mm, D: 460 mm, and H: 700 mm, making it a versatile and functional addition to any living space. The sideboard features three doors, each equipped with Hettich brand hinges for a soft opening and closing experience.

The design and realization of the Augustus sideboard took place in Ankara, Turkey. The project started in August 2013 and was completed in January 2014. Throughout the design process, Duruoglu conducted extensive research, studying people's lifestyles and behaviors, as well as contemporary fashion and furniture trends. He also explored the metal industry to find the perfect material for the sideboard's doors. Wood samples were created in the workshop to ensure the right selection of wood type.

The Augustus sideboard has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2016. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Augustus sideboard stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its ability to provide fulfillment and positive feelings to users.
